My husband and I were bathing Oliver the other day when we started to discuss just how HUGE he has gotten in the past 4 months!
It reminded me of his VERY first bath we did at home. It was probably the scariest thing we had to do.
We gathered ten washcloths, four towels, a rattle to keep him occupied, put new sheets on his crib and new pillow case on his pillow and I picked out an entire outfit. Whale patterned gown, hat, booties, mittens, robe and swaddle. Yes, we over did it.
We started off calm, placed him in the infant tub. It came with a little newborn sling so he was more comfortable.
Just like they taught us in the NICU, we placed a warm washcloth on his tiny body and poured some warm water on him. Very calm and peaceful and quiet.
We were cooing and ahhing at him, tickling him and massaging gently to keep him calm, warm and get him clean.
All of a sudden Oliver lost his mind. Like, literally out of nowhere and unprovoked.
He started screaming and crying and doing his silent cry where he opens his mouth and nothing comes out until he turned so red we thought something was wrong.
But then he would take a big gulp of air and scream, his cries echoed in the tile lined bathroom and echoed until our ears were ringing.
Oh goodness gracious! This turned into quite the ordeal.
Panicked we started trying to bathe him super fast! Bumping and pushing into each other in the tiny bathroom running between the tub and the sink to keep the water warm to pour clean water on him and get rid of the suds.
By the end all three of us were soaking wet, sweaty, yelling, sobbing and shaking.
I’m glad that nowadays bath time is enjoyable. Oliver enjoys it and we enjoy spending time with him. He gets a little massage and gets his head rubbed gets nice and clean slowly and peacefully.
I love using a natural sea sponge, they are inexpensive, natural and the small ones can be used to scrub a tad while since they are very absorbent you can also use them to rinse off the little one.
To wet the babe we use the most adorable little whale from Skip Hop. It features a slow waterfall spout which allows me not to have to refill it so many times as the water flows pretty slowly and evenly.
For the soap we just use Puracy baby body wash / shampoo. It has a lovely faint smell, it’s affordable and good for the baby. He seems to like it. It has gotten in his eyes and it didn’t bother him at all so it’s really tear free.
We are lucky he loves bath time because at this time he is in a Doc Band so we have to bathe him EVERY day because he sweats a lot on the helmet.
It does take a little time but we just slow down and enjoy the family time.
We use The First Years Sure Comfort Deluxe Baby Bathing Tub with the sling. I also purchased, from Summer Infant, the Comfy Bath Sponge.
It’s a large yellow sponge that really makes the tub more comfortable for Ollie.
SO we put the sling in and on top of the sling the giant sponge. It really helps a lot, he feels more surefooted on it and will relax long enough to enjoy getting clean.
Now since he is five months old I am anxiously awaiting the day he actually SITS UP can “help” during bath time.
Oliver looks so cute after a bath and he’s ALWAYS starving after. So once he finishes several ounces of milk he snuggles up and falls asleep.
He sleeps ALL NIGHT LONG which is the perfect time to have a movie night with my husband.
