As a new, budget conscious, space conscious (our house is tiny) and focused on education mommy I am always on the lookout for THE toy. There are gajillion toys on the market and sifting through them all is a full time job. I am lucky enough to be able to stay home with my little one but I know a lot of mommies don’t have that luxury. So I wanted to introduce new, busy mommies to SmartNoggin Toys.
I stumbled across their company about four months ago, just about the time my little Oliver was coming home from the NICU. I wanted to purchase something that would be itty bitty to fit a newborn’s hand. I found that most rattles on the market were gargantuan, thick, clumsy and uninteresting. That is why when I saw the Peek & Seek rattle, I was intrigued.
I contacted Marcia, the founder of the company and she provided me with so much information. Her company has three products and each of them has been developed and engineered with a baby’s developmental stages in mind.
Furthermore, these toys have won many awards and they top Best Toys lists year after year! Each toy can be used to spark your baby’s interest and help them reach milestones from newborn, to infant and even toddler! I am absolutely blown away by this woman owned business!
She doesn’t just crank out toys left and right, each toy takes a very long time to perfect so you can rest assured that you are getting not only a toy but a tool to help your baby succeed as they sail through this very important time in their lives.
Before I continue, I should explain the helmet Oliver is wearing in the photos, it’s called a DocBand and it’s a lightweight foam/plastic helmet that is used to correct flat spots babies have on their heads. In Oliver’s case it is to correct the flat spots he got while laying for many weeks in the NICU.
Okay, now that we got the helmet question out of the way (believe me, wherever we go people stop and stare or ask questions about his helmet), lets get back to this awesome rattle! Because of Oliver’s interest in SmartNoggin toys, we actually own all three, the NogginSeek, NogginStik and NogginRings! Today I really want to focus on the NogginSeek: Peek & Seek Cognitive Rattle, the newest addition to their lineup.
I know there are many toy reviews out there that stick a rattle in a baby’s hand and take photos. This is truly not one of those reviews. I reached out to SmartNoggin Toys because Oliver was so insanely in love with one of their rattles!
He has so many toys (Mommy may have gone overboard) that make a lot of noise, cost $100, are organic, talk to the baby, etc etc. BUT when Oliver is doing tummy time and we put out several toys, he only grabs for the NogginSeek (or the 2 other SmartNoggin toys)!
If he’s being fussy in his rocker and we are trying to eat our dinner, we give him the NogginSeek and he happily stares at it with his mouth wide open in amazement.
Oliver just recently started discovering that he can put everything in his mouth so the NogginSeek performs that task as well! Oliver loves gnawing at the rubber blue doughnut shaped handle. And during diaper changes, this toy is fantastic as it keeps Oliver occupied and tear-free!
While visiting the doctor, I saw an older child, maybe 9 or 10 months, playing with the NogginSeek in the waiting room! So I chatted with the mom and she told me her little baby girl LOVES the rattle as well.
The NogginSeek is also super lightweight so it is easy for little hands and arms to maneuver it and shake it until they tire themselves out!
I will be introducing you all to all three SmartNoggin toys but I wanted to start with this one as it’s Oliver’s newest addition and his new favorite!
A little background on the toy. Each SmartNoggin toy comes with a little booklet called Parent Guide to Baby’s Milestones. It’s a beautifully illustrated and informative pamphlet.
The rattle itself is made out of a clear plastic so the child can see everything that is going on inside the rattle. The sphere on top has an engraved smiley face on it, with bright yellow ears. The rattle beads can be seen jumping around in there when the child is playing. The beads are all blue except for one that is white, which is a nice little touch of interest.
There is a red and white tube that moves up and down hiding and releasing the beads which is SO COOL. If the rattle is positioned straight up the beads disappear but when the baby rattles it and the tube moves up, the beads spill out into the clear sphere again. Making for a fun game of hide and seek.
One of Oliver’s favorite part about this rattle is the textured handle. He loves to chew on it and practice grasping. The texture of the handle is rubbery but quite soft!
As far as aesthetics, this toy is quite stylish with a muted color scheme and timeless appeal. The weight and shape of the toy makes it perfect to slip into my jacket pocket, stroller pocket, car seat or diaper bag. It’s small and super lightweight.
The developmental benefits the NogginSeek provides include baby’s awareness of object permanence as the beads hide in the striped tube and are released as baby plays with the rattle. The sound the rattle makes is quite pleasant, not too loud, not too jingly. The shape of the rubber handle with it’s grooves is good for grasping, Oliver learned to grasp this toy very early on. He loves to hold it by the blue handle or by the red and white stripe rod.
I can’t say enough about SmartNoggin’s trio of toys and hope you all stay tuned as I talk about the other two toys in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please hop over to SmartNoggin’s website where there are pages and pages of resources about the company, the benefits of their toys, developmental milestones of little ones and much much more. While you’re there pick up this rattle for your little one, you won’t regret it!
Also, if you have experience with this toy, please share your comments below, I LOVE hearing from other moms of tiny ones!
Note: This review is completely honest. I wanted to provide my readers with information on what has worked for our family and what Oliver enjoys playing with.
